Default G16 Newb - What to do first?

Just bought a 1999 G16 yesterday. Its basically unmodified and in pretty good shape considering its been in salt air at the beach for years. It accelerates great and runs fine but seems to slow down after it reaches that initial top speed.

Its my first cart and I'm no mechanic, but I know the basics. I want to adjust the governor but first I want to make sure I've got a mechanically sound cart that won't crap out. What are the first things I should be doing/checking to ensure my Yamaha will run forever.

Thanks!

Change the oil: 10w30 one quart
Change the Diff oil: 75w90
Lightly grease the front clutch: grease fitting around edge of housing, couple of pumps
Lightly grease rear clutch shaft/bushing: grease fitting on inside part of inner sheeve (triangle area), one pump should do (DO NOT OVERGREASE, IT WILL GET GREASE ALL OVER BELT)
Check the air filter, spark plug (use NGK), fuel filter (replace if needed)
Check the front king pin bushings: end of a-arms by the tires, they usually have little rubber caps on top of them, grease them
Check all your fuel and vacuum lines, replace with the exact same size if needed
Check your belts and replace if needed

Bypass the governor and get rid of the small governor cable, run the main carb cable directly from the peddle to the carb and adjust, just be mindful of your rpms and don't overrev

If you lift the cart and get bigger wheels/tires, get the torque spring

Check out the sticky threads (up top) in this section for more info and instructions on things

Welcome to the forum and the golf cart addiction! And 99 G16's are excellent carts (very fast)

Wow thanks for the detailed list, spriddle. That gives me a good to-do list. I've read in other threads about switching to synthetic oil when bypassing the governor. Is that a good idea?

No effence to my friend Sprid, but I would not bypass the govenor. Just turn the govenor up and see if it meets your needs first.

Gee's Sprid!! Another half days work for me!!

And I'd say a 99 G16, is one of the best cars out there!! Good find!!

And being a beach car, can't overstate taking a VERY good look for rust!!

Use only Genuine Yamaha air filter... Its worth the money. Or try this, part number (from my memory, may not be perfect) "GCA-CRBMT-KT", Should be a full "tune-up kit" complete with genuine air filter, pre-cleaner, 1 Qt yamaha oil, spark plug, fuel filter, and new gasket for drain plug. Genuine air filter has orange or blue rubber seal, never black (cheap china stuff)

Probably a good idea starting out.

Correct new part number for tune-up kit : "LUB-GCCRB-MT-KT"
