Default Mixed batteries 6v and 12v

I am working on a 2001 txt series cart 36v it has 4 6 volt batteries and 1 12 volt battery in it is there anything wrong with running it this way it charges to 37.4 volts when charged but doesn't last long could the mismatch be the problem going to test individual batteries tonight. Any thoughts?

your 12v battery is drawing down the others ...
your pack voltage at 37.4v is only 80% charged
replace with 2~6v batteries

Mixing batteries of different capacities in a series circuit is always a bad idea. They will discharge, and charge, at different rates, so would need to be charged separately to reach full charge. You also run the risk of over-discharging the lower-capacity battery (in this case, the 12V)..

You did not state the capacities of the 6V and 12V batteries but if they are different then you will have problems. The lower capacity battey will be over charged / discharged and the higher capacity battery may never get fully charged. Battery life will suffer greatly. Charging and Discharging batteries in series requires that they all be fairly equal in capacity and charge characteristics. (Same age and capacity!)

Not true...also electricity takes the path of least resistance which means the batteries will all charge and discharge at different rates regardless of type or voltage. In other words,,identical batteries in series will all charge slightly different....as they age even more differences occur. They also discharge at different rates(regardless of type). The last battery in a series(positive connection) always gets more use and fails first. Automatic chargers measure total voltage to determine when to cut off and this likely means some are charged more than others in the series..Check individual voltages several hours after charging and replace the batteries with low voltages.
hope this helps some. OH!!! keep water in those batteries!!!

So this is saying it takes 47 volts for a 36 volt system to be charged??????????? Maybe you thought it was a 48 volt system

Here is a charge chart to help with the state of charge percentage stuff.

Basically you cannot mix battery voltages ( like 6 and 12 ) within a pack because the charger gives the same charge to every battery in the pack.
6v and 12v have different amperage & voltage capacity which equals different charge needs.
