Default 2 Wire LED Voltage meter for '98 36 volt resistor club car

I just picked up a 2 wire voltage meter with no instructions. In reading various posts about wiring these meters I am still a little confused about the best way to do this. I understand that I need to run a positive from the meter to the #1 battery positive terminal, and the negative from the meter to the #6 battery negative terminal. This set up should leave the LED meter on all the time, will this hurt anything. If so, how should I include the ignition switch since this is a 2 wire meter? Also what gage of wire is recommended?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Is it a digital meter with the 7 segment displays? The LEDs drain is minuscule on the pack, so it won't hurt anything if it's left on all the time. You can however connect the positive wire to the key switch so that it is on only when the cart is on. Use a voltmeter to check which terminal on the key switch is hot when in the on position. 18 gauge wire will work...

The digital meter face looks like this "8.8.8". When you say to connect the positive wire to the key switch do you mean directly from the #1 battery positive terminal to the key switch or the the meter and then to the key switch? Thanks for your quick reply, Jake!

The negative from the meter will go to the main pack negative and the positive from the meter will go to the key switch. Hopefully the attached diagram helps. There will be nothing going to the main positive on the pack.

Thanks, Jake, you have been very helpful to a wiring novice. I'm sure it will work great, now its off to get the wire and connections. Thanks again.
