Marathon Reverse Not Working
Hey Fellas,
I have been having an issue with my reverse for a month now, but it is getting worse and I could use your help. I believe the problem to be in the F N R switch. The cart works fine in forward, but I have to bang on the switch knob to get the reverse switch to turn engine on. Please see my video for more info. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQsVEYc7xtY |

Re: Marathon Reverse Not Working
That microswitch is called the neutral safety switch. It makes contact in both forward, and reverse.
When in the indentations, the lever pops up, and makes contact to close the switch. The 4 big wires on the back are what determine which way the starter turns. That is most likely where your problem is. Clean up the big lugs, and possibly tighten them where they make contact. I haven't done it yet, but I suspect that you can remove the big nut in the center to disassemble the switch for a good cleaning. You can test your microswitch by just jumping the 2 wires together. The microswitch on the opposite side of the forward and reverse switch is to activate the backup buzzer. It doesn't do anything else. If you determine that your neutral safety switch really is bad, you can leave it jumped, or swap it with the backup buzzer microswitch. I still suspect the 4 big lugs. |

Re: Marathon Reverse Not Working
That does make sense. When that switches inside the indentations it does just barely make contact. That is all very helpful, I will attempt to give it a good cleaning and see what happens.

Re: Marathon Reverse Not Working
I had a similar issue with my Marathon. One of my 12ga wires out back were worn thru the insulation so I agree check and clean those. I also for good measure (and because I'm too lazy to take that switch apart) soaked the whole thing down with wd-40. Have not had a prob. since. WD does a good job of creeping in there and cleaning stuff up.

Re: Marathon Reverse Not Working
Well I did get a chance to inspect the switch...
you can just remove the larger nut and bolt ( Middle one the lever is connected to). I believe to have found the problem. You can see where the copper has worn off of 2 of the bolts ( one on each contact end ). I highly doubt ( but you never know) if they sell those parts. Hopefully I won't have to buy a new switch. Thanks for help guys. I will report back when I do more. |

2SlickNick, I am in the middle of cleaning all the connections on mine also. Did you find any springs inside the FNR switch, or is it as plain as the pics.

Re: Marathon Reverse Not Working
OK thanks. I didn't want to take it apart and have things go flying, I'm working on this in the yard, and trying to find small parts in the grass is a royal pain in the $$$.

Re: Marathon Reverse Not Working
The copper bolts are still sold, about $2 each. All automotive electric shops have them.
