Default Headlights and taillights quit working

My lights haven't worked for a few years, so I thought I'd try and find out why. In tracing out the wiring from the taillights , when I removed the controller cover I found this loose wire. It goes into the cable from the taillights. It's black so I assume it's a ground..? Sorry, I'm not much of an electrical person. It can reach to the negative battery terminal, it's possible I didn't reattach it when I cleaned the cables. But not sure. Can someone tell me where they think this wire should go..?
Thanks.

If it had factory headlights with no converter it would get 12 volts from the back 2 batteries on the passenger side. Black wire is negative connected to the back passenger battery negative and there should be a green wire attached to the positive on the back center battery.

Thanks...
I went ahead and attached the black wire to the negative and now the headlights and taillights work. I thought that's where it went, I just wanted to be sure.

In the future when you remove wires from a lug put them together with a bread tie or zip tie and you won’t have this problem again.
