The upgrade is mandatory if the controllers have been replaced. The reason why is because some Bad Boys were having stuck accelerator or uncommanded throttle issues that allow the car to run even with no foot on the pedal. The upgrade was part of a field service bulletin and recall.

All replacement controllers are programmed to only accept the new upgrade assembly. Any attempt to use the original will throw a code for throttle switch open or stuck.
