Which RTV Silicone for Oil Pan?
OK, workin' my project. Took off the gear pan, but can't find my tube of silicone gasket to put it back on.
I remember it is a special type, like for gear oil, and it is grey, and someone posted a pic, but I can't find on the search. Which grey RTV is it? Also, what's the best way to get the remnant silicone off the pan? Thanks! Edit: I think I remember: Permatex 81182 Gear Oil RTV? |

Re: Which RTV Silicone for Oil Pan?
Soak the edge of the pan in some gas and the remnant of the silicone on the pan will roll off

Re: Which RTV Silicone for Oil Pan?
I've always used red RTV. Works perfectly fine here. I suppose clear works as well.

Re: Which RTV Silicone for Oil Pan?
I use a wire brush on drill or wire wheel on grinder to make quick work of removing old silicone.
Ultra Black or ultra blue silicone for cover. Both will work. I use ultra black on auto differentials ,ultra blue on oil pans. Valve covers and intakes. Both with will work as they very slightly swell when cured. I no longer use gaskets on oil pans, valve covers or differential covers, they seal that good. No leaks on my engines. Just my experience 👍 |
