Thanks OK looks like the VR is kaput....pain here in Ireland as parts are sometimes 10 time USA prices if available ! cheers anyways

Thanks Camohorse..... unfortunately they are around US$70-80 on this side of the pond & those USA eBay suppliers often charge $30-$50 shipping then duties payable this end so its most often not really viable..... I have purchased several small parts in USA whilst visiting ..... thanks for the pointer.... will have to swallow the pill this time I think !

can anyone tell me is this VR purely a regulator or is it also a rectifier ?..... is it ac or dc out of the generator then rectified & regulated prior to feeding back to charge the battery?

It's a generator.
Open up the voltage regulator, and use some sandpaper on the points inside. You might get lucky. If it doesn't work, you didn't lose anything. |

The voltage regulator is a solid state sealed unit like in pic not one of the older cannister types that can be opened so am ordering replacement.
What I was trying to find out was whether it is an ac or dc output from the generator perhaps you are telling me that its dc generator & not an ac alternator? |
