new 48v motor
I just installed a new motor on my cart. My question is whether or not there is a break in period on it??

Re: new 48v motor
I've never heard of an electric motor break in period. Doesn't mean there isn't one...

Re: new 48v motor
The brushes can take a short while to seat all the way, but its nothing you need to even think about, just drive it.

Re: new 48v motor
On your 48v you'll be fine but there definitely is a break in on higher voltage/amp motors.
Electric drag racers typically bench run motors for as much as 80 hours to perfectly seat the brushes to the comm. Even though our motor builder pre-shapes the brushes to the comm, I still run mine in on my bench setup for 8 to 10 hours before we run them in the dragster. I run around my neighborhood a few times and make some easy, low power passes the first time at the track. Learned the hard way that sending 190 volts and 2000 amps to a motor that the brushes aren't seated well is expensive. Here's my setup to run in the brushes... |
