1988 ezgo 2pg, if fuel pump works are crank seals good?
hey guys,
I've got an 88' ezgo 2 stroke that wont start, good compression 120psi, blue spark, and getting fuel. but will not fire a bit, wont fire even with gas squirted in sparkplug hole. removed muffler, no difference. if fuel pump works is that a sign that crank seals are good? even if seals are worn shouldn't it at least hit a time or two with full in spark plug hole? thanks |

Yes, if fuel pump works, seals are likely to be fine. The pump needs decent pressure to function properly.

Spark and Gas generally equal combustion. You would think it would at least turn over. Make sure your air intake hoses aren’t crimped or blocked. Make sure your choke works. My 88 2pg will not start without choke.

honestly if its getting good spark, it has good compression , and its getting fuel properly, it should fire up and run.. like the other said i would check choke first, if the choke works properly then id suspect its not getting fuel properly.

Has it ever started for you, or did you just get it from somebody?

I just got it and it was not running, owner said it just quit.
i'm stumped, got good fuel, spark and compression, it should run but not firing a lick. if it was a v8 engine i'd think it had jumped time, but anyway for a 2stroke to change timing? |

Easy test would be to spray atomized Gas (poke a hole in the cap of a water bottle) or get some starting fluid and spray it in the carb intake side. If you have compression to your head and have spark....it’ll turn over. Then you can look at fuel system or air
Two strokes are pretty cut and dry. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: 1988 ezgo 2pg, if fuel pump works are crank seals good?
It should at least try to fire on ether. If it doesn't, everything points to seals.
Here comes the big but....., but something doesn't sound right here. If the previous owner was being honest, it should fire. I suspect that he did a bit more work than he is admitting to. I would check to see if the piston is in backwards. If you can see a square hole in the side of the piston from the exhaust port, then it's in backwards. |

Are the plugs wet after a little time of trying to start it? They should have some gas and oil on em.
I've also seen older or bad spark plugs on 2 strokes with decent compression be the issue. Even if you are getting spark when they are out of the head and grounded. Get some fresh ones, and double check the gap. |

Re: 1988 ezgo 2pg, if fuel pump works are crank seals good?
i'll try some more things today, engine hasn't been apart i'm pretty sure so piston should be ok. wont fire on starting fluid in carb.
maybe the spark is weaker than I think, but its a blue spark with plug out and grounded. compression takes about 4-5 revolutions to reach 120, is that normal? might try the hei conversion. very puzzled. |
