Drive belt clutch?
I have an 1988 EZGO gas cart. I understand it doesn’t have much power to start with but it seems to take longer to, for lack of a better word, downshift when climbing a hill than it used to. Is there something I should look for or something I can do? I jacked up the back and started it and I can see both drive pulleys open and close with engine speed but sometimes when climbing a hill it almost dies before downshifting.
Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Drive belt clutch?
You can put a shorter belt on which should help you with torque. I believe the stock belt is 45"x1 3/16". Do a search for a Dayco HP 3004 which is I think approximately 7/8" shorter.
Now with that being said I'd wait for some others to chime in here. I can't imagine that you're climbing hills so steep that your cart is almost dying as you put it. There may be another problem. Maybe you have a clutch issue. Are your clutches opening and closing as they should be? |

Re: Drive belt clutch?
I just measured the belt and it’s 1 1/16 across the back of it. Could it be the belt is worn out?

Re: Drive belt clutch?
I would spray the shaft of the driven clutch with graphite, or Moly-lube.

I personally would get a new one. That's an 1/8" of a difference. |

Re: Drive belt clutch?
Does anyone have a Dayco or Gates part number for the correct size belt? 1 3/16 x 45 1/2

Re: Drive belt clutch?
Thanks for all the help, the belt is ordered.
Now the question is how do I change it? Do I have to loosen the engine so I can get slack to remove the old belt and install the new one? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Drive belt clutch?
No need to remove the engine, there's a few ways to get it off but first step is to work the belt down in the driven clutch which spreads the sheaves apart creating slack. On mine I can then slip it off the drive clutch then remove it from the driven clutch...... ... Install the new one by the same method, down in the driven clutch to create slack then over the drive clutch.
Sometimes it's possible to work it off of the driven clutch first too, work it down into it and it might have enough slack to pull it out around and off. Bottom line; keep working it into the driven clutch to create as much slack as you can then remove from whichever clutch is easier....Good Luck |

Re: Drive belt clutch?
That makes good sense. The shipment notification says delivery by 8/20 so I’ll find out by next week if this helps. Thanks.
