Question Can Battery Terminal corrosion be prevented?

Can anyone tell me why battery terminals corrode, (and why some don't)
and if there's anything I can do to halt this process?

Thanks!!

If you get everything real clean and then nice and tight, get the terminal spray and give them all a good coat and then don't have a leak or over fill the batteries, they should stay clean.
Leaks and overfilling are a good cause of corrosion as well as electrolysis. Terminal posts are generally lead and the ringlets are usually copper or steal combine that with copper wire and you get Electrolysis. this is why good cables are soldered and sealed with heat shrink to keep out air. All these things speed up corrosion. Because the metal is different it causes corrosion.

The main culprit is acidic vapors released by the batteries when they gas during heavy charging. The hydrogen gas which is produced by heavy charging is carrying acid with it in vapor form when it leaves the battery cap vents. This is a necessary part of a deep recharge. Without this process the battery can become stratified. But that's a topic for another thread. Clean as suggested. When every metal surface shines apply anything acid resistant which keeps the metal from contacting the air. Vaseline or dielectric grease or any one of many battery spray products will work. Coat the clean posts first, then coat clean battery cable on ends on all sides before installing them and then coat the nut once tightened. This should do it

Thanks, too, ScottyB!

I've tried corrosion sprays and they don't seem to work too long.

Are vaseline or dialectric grease longer lasting?

These coverings need to be reapplied occasionally...
Unless you use something like Vaseline or axle lube which makes a hell of a mess for the guy checking that the bolts have remained snug. That is a reason they call this maintenance.
Just re spray when you check water levels ...

I use the corrosion spray, but I spray it into the cap from the can and apply it with a 1/2" throw-away bristle paint brush. Makes for a much neater application, and allows me to get UNDER the lugs.
