Air escaping sound when I turn my sterring wheel!
Long time since I last posted! I am back to working 0on the cart. 1997 TXT. Major problems from the get go.
Well I am getting close to getting it finished up. I noticed after I replaces the steering componets I have an "hissing" sound coming out of the steering box. Like air is escaping from some where! I have been very frustrated with how much work I have done and feel like I am not even getting any closer. Thanks in advance, you guys sure know what your doing! Sincerely, Manwitaplan |

Re: Air escaping sound when I turn my sterring wheel!
It is very possible that the rack & pinion is making that noise. As you turn the wheel, the pinion gear forces the steering rack into the black plastic resevoir. This resevoir could be packed with grease, and as the rack invades and leaves this space it could very well create suction and air pressure. Easy enough to test, remove the resevoir and turn the wheel. If the noise goes away......

Shake it off...don't get frustrated or it will become a chore vs. a hobby. We have all done the same thing. I just usually drink another beer and do something else for awhile then come back to it.

I have never heard a TXT that did NOT make this noise and I think Gornoman's explaination is correct. It is definitely not an issue.

Don't worry! Be happy!
All the "hissing" means is that you've got plenty of grease in rack. Gorno nailed it. Now...what else has been bothering you? ;) |

Re: Air escaping sound when I turn my sterring wheel!
Thanks Ya'll!
I had talked to a shop owner the other day about some parts and service. While we were talking I mentioned the hissing sound and he made it out to seem that it is a major issue. I worked on it last night and got quite a few things accomplished. Feel a lot better. Still need to change the battery wires, get the seats recovered, figure out a light set up, etc.... I owe you guys pics... let me get a few next time I work on it! |
