Got stranded by the *^%#@(+!~* reed switch circuit.
However, I managed to fix it on the spot.
I was taking a spin after attaching a thermocouple on the motor case to monitor its temperature and the cart suddenly lost power and coasted to a stop about six miles from home. No beeping or regen braking, nothing except the deafening sound of silence. SoC meter reading 37.5V and climbing, solenoid not clicking, no reverse beeper. Fortunately I was using a DMM to monitor motor temperature and had stashed the test leads in a cup holder when I removed them to plug in the thermocouple and I've looked at the PDS schematic so many times while helping people on the forum that it's etched on my eyelids. No voltage on J1 Pin-4 (Reed Switch input to controller, but cart has a factory installed fuse instead of a reed switch), so I was going to measure the voltage on the small wire coming out of the charge receptacle. When I tried to pull apart the in-line connector, the wire going to controller came out of the connector. Cut the connectors off and stripped insulation with nail-clippers, twisted the wires together and drove cart home. -------- I lucked out, but Ill be putting together an emergency repair kit in the near future. |

Good Job Johnny, at least you retained your dignity and didn't have to have a Clutz Car or worse yet, a GAS cart tow you back to base

---------- Nail clippers are less than ideal for stripping wire, so I redid the connection when I got home and soldered it. Used a wire nut to insulated it and now I've a connection that will tolerate vibration better than a pair of crimped on spade lugs as well as an easily accessible test point. I suspect it was a bad crimp from the factory (Crimped too hard) and it has taken 5 years of wiggling to break the last strand of wire at the weakest point. Never have been a big fan on crimp-on type connectors, even less now. |
