The way I did my lower end rebuild:

1. Put crank and crank bearings in freezer for a few hrs
2. Get bbq grill out, heat up on low for 20 min
3. Put engine case in grille (on a pan) for 15 min
4. Get bearings out of freezer
5. Get engine cases out of grille, put on workbench
6. Place bearings in engine case, allow to sit 30 min

That will get the bearings into the cases. Now you'll need to install the crank.

1. Put engine cases in bbq again, with bearings installed
2. Make sure the bearings are facing up or they'll fall out.
3. Allow 15 min of warm up time and remove
4. Get cold crank out of freezer
5. Install cold crank into warm bearings, should slide right in
6. Make sure you get the crank facing the right direction (btdt)
7. Allow entire assembly to come to room temp.
8. Separate cases 1/2" and apply correct gasket goo.
9. Reassemble cases, install bolts loosely, torque in sequence.

I used this method twice, worked great! The whole process took about 2 hrs with cooling time figured in.

Then you'll install the seals. Some guys have said to use loctite on the seals to hold them in the block. I didn't. Still running good today.

What kind of goo to use? I have blue gasket goo i may have some red some where but that is for hi heat and i have so black stuff that never really hardens up...
Why don't they just make a gasket for it like most engines ?

I am going to try a veneration to the method of putting the case back together
1. i put the crank in the freezer over night
2. the next day i heated up the bearing to 200-225 F for 30 min in the over on a baking tray
3. set out a towel and got so heavy gloves or welding gloves ,grabbed the crank out of the freezer then grabbed one bearing at a time and slide them on the appropriate sides, let side till the bearings were cold then put the bearings and crank back in the freezer.

now this part i haven't done yet but will let you know how it works out...

4. I want to heat up the lager side of the case not sure how long but 30-40 min should be fine at 200-2250F ,then once put together and let cool for a bit i will put all in the freezer for a while then heat up the other side of the case ,while the large side is cooling down for 30 mins or so i will pull it back out of the freezer,then as the case is warming up i will put a bit of blue goo on and then get the other half and hopefully it will side together with a light taping of the rubber hammer, with the blue goo in place i can put a few bolts in to hold it together and let the gasket goo set before final tightening of the case bolts...hope it works as well as i hope it will...

well that worked out like a train wreck lol i don't think the bearing is all the way in the case so when you go to tighten up the case it binds the crank... so i guess put the bearings in the case first is the way to do it... my way was easy to get together but the end result it didn't work... back to the drawing board...

Sorry it didn't work out for you. Not sure but you might have to take the crank down to a shop to have it pressed off, unless you have a press. Yeah, I wasn't sure about putting the bearings on the crank first, so I put them in the case and it worked out the first try. Fit perfectly back together.

Once I got the crank and bearings in, I waited until it cooled off to put the sealer on the cases. I used Permatex Grey. I found a few threads here that recommended it. Once I got a smear of the goo on there (very thin) I pushed the cases together and snugged down. Torqued in sequence to spec.

Once that was done I installed the seals very last.

Was your crank alittle tight after doing the final torque? i know its only 4.7 ft lbs...
I find the crank sits a little more to one side then the other but moves quite well, i may stick in the press and move it , i hope with out breaking the case...
either way putting them in the case worked way better then on the crank first..thanks for all your help

well the press did it,so i spread it apart and put sealant on the case and pulled it back together and it binded up abit so i use the press to bring the crank back into aliment and she spins like a free bird.. one headache down ,now i just have to have the jug looked at and honed a bit to get the ridge out of it and check for clearance

so have you rebuilt a g1 engine? and if so when you put the oil seals on did it tighten up the crank abit? i did put some oil on them to slide over the crank, it moves a little stiff.
