85 marathon motor testing?
Trying to figure out this motor. I got 38.12V from the batteries. When I connect my DVM to the S1 and A2 on the motor I get 38.11V when I hit the pedal but nothing moves. Is my motor shot? 1985 EZ GO marathon 36V.

Re: 85 marathon motor testing?
You should get your battery voltage on both A1 and A2 terminals when the pedal is pressed and the solenoid clicks. A1 is connected to B+ through the solenoid contacts and A2 voltage gets negative from the controller M1 output through the forward neutral reverse switch which should decrease as pedal in depressed further. The S1 and S2 should have voltage across them and the polarity is determined by which direction is selected. Getting voltage across the two terminals you mention does not indicate the motor is bad (or good). What happened, did the cart quit working and why do you suspect the motor? There are a lot of other things that can cause the cart not to run. You might need to get another opinion. I am having a little difficulty reading the diagram. (I think I got it right)

Re: 85 marathon motor testing?
My cart was heating and I dragged a big hog back to camp. Once the cart cooled down and I tried to go again it would not budge.

Re: 85 marathon motor testing?
You need to check some points for B+ 38 volts. You mentioned the solenoid was clicking and you had voltage on motor terminal A2. This voltage on A2 should decrease as you press the pedal and A1 should stay at 38 volts. If it don't see voltage on A2 drop you probably smoked the controller. When the solenoid first energizes you should have 38volts on A1 and A2. (Don't be confused if you see voltage on the A terminals without pressing the pedal). If voltage on A2 drops when you press the pedal and the motor don't turn the motor is suspect. I am not all that familiar with the Marathon wiring but that seems the way the thing is supposed to work. I will be back later.
NOTE: Protect cart from sudden movement while working on it in case it decides to take off. Last edited by radioman; 08-19-2014 at 07:47 PM.. Reason: add note |
