Success!! The cart runs, took it out for test drive and she runs. I do have one problem. When you the cart starts it lurches forward dramatically and then is difficult to slow. What might be causing that?

It might do that if you have the coils wired incorrectly... each coil is a different speed. You might have 4th gear wired in front of second? see what I mean.

That's what I was thinking also, but I'm pretty sure I wired it just like the diagram. I'll check again. Any other causes that you can think of off hand?

If your coils are in the correct order and the wires going to the coils from your wiper board are in the correct order, then it may just be the nature of the beast. Check those things first, but if not then it is just how those resistor carts take off. I have one and it just likes to lurch forward.

Eventually I want to swap to a solid state, but that upgrade will come later

Found out from a closer inspection that the wiper contacts were bridging together due to wear and tear. Used a hacksaw blade and basically filed in between the contacts to free them. Seems like poor designing to be so close. Now I have a smooth running cart! Already took the kids, and wife for a ride and there's no laughing about the cart now! Thank you to all who posted and your help. I will definitely be doing some upgrading at a later date and will remember where to go for expert opinions.
