Help for removing brake drum
On the TXT 96 year model. The motor runs and there is a grinding sound from the back, but will not move forward or back.
I am in the process of removing the rear axles. On the drivers side the brake hub came off ok using the instruction to put a bar so that it engages the wheel bolts to keep the brake drum from moving. That castelated nut came off just fine. However, on the passenger side when the brake drum is kept from moving the castelated nut and axle moves so that the nut cannot be removed. I suppose that this means the splined shaft is sheared which is why it doesn't go. Any help in how to remove the nut and brake hub with this condition? |

Re: Help for removing brake drum
An impact wrench should take care of it.

Re: Help for removing brake drum
The brake hub/drum is striped, look in side the brake drum and you will see that the splines are strip in the drum, check the axle to make sure it is ok, clean the splines on the axle real good, buy a new brake hub and install it, torque the castle nut down on the brake hub to #140 lbs, and you should be good to go

Re: Help for removing brake drum
Thanks for response, but the trouble is I can't remove the castelated nut to remove the brake hub. How do I keep the shaft from rotating to remove the nut?

Re: Help for removing brake drum
dv, the impact should be able to remove it even though the hub is stripped. do your same hold the stud trick and hit the impact, spline should grab enough to get the nut off then the hub should slide off.

Re: Help for removing brake drum
OK. The impact wrench did the trick. The hub is off. The splined shaft looks OK. So should just have to replace the hub.
The bearings look OK. It is worth the trouble to replace them since I have gone this far or is it more trouble than it is worth. Thanks again for the help. |

Re: Help for removing brake drum
IMO... If the bearings look ok and no fluid leaks and no noise, just change the hubs and torque them to 140ftlbs I believe. Changing the bearings can be a bear..

Re: Help for removing brake drum
Have installed a new brake hub after cleaning the splines on the axle shaft. Lubricated splines with lithium grease and the hubs went on just fine. Tightened the bolt to 130/140 ft lbs and test ride was great with everything working well.
