Battery Corrosion
How do I control battery corrosion on the battery terminals and battery rails? I sprayed battery terminal protect-ant on the terminals and in a months time is had started to come back.

Re: Battery Corrosion
I use a little arm and hammer baking soda and water solution. I put it on the corroded terminals and let lit set for about 30 minutes. It will foam while it neutralizes the acid and corrosion. Then gently hose it off being careful not to wet any electric wires or connectors. When it dries put battery grease or corrosion preventer of your choosing.. Keep battery caps on during this and don't let any of the soda solution get into the battery electrolyte or it will ruin the batteries. I have used clear Vaseline or joint grease. Lately I use a spray on battery protectant after cleaning and letting the terminals dry. Vaseline is ok. Be sure to use care and lightly rinse battery tops and the battery tray thoroughly to get all the acid rinsed out of the battery tray. Do not ever spray WB-40 on battery terminals with the intent of preventing corrosion. You will wind up with a connection with a light grey appearance that looks good but won't conduct electricity like it should after six months. Like Scotty mentions spray on solutions don't always get sprayed on all terminal surfaces. (unless you pay attention to what you are doing and spray all sides).

Re: Battery Corrosion
one more thing......when you charge your cart....LIFT UP THE SEAT WHILE ITS CHARGING! this allows the gas out and the acid fumes don't accumulate.
I ALWAYS lift the carts seat up when charging, and have never put anything onj the battery studs/posts.....after 10 months....my batteries look like the day I put them on the cart. |

Re: Battery Corrosion
I love this stuff also!
It really is hard to apply in the cold winter months though. It's almost a good vasoline consistency when the weather warms up. I've NEVER seen corrosion build on terminals if they were cleaned, neutralized and then COVERED with no ox id. I even melt it into cable strands before crimping. It's just hard to find and very difficult to apply in cold weather. Oh yeah.. Works great on the forward/ reverse contacts also! |
