Default 99 DS - Has fuel and spark, wont start/popping out carb

Hi all,

Im working on a new to me 99 DS. Cart has spark, good fuel and 180 compression. I cannot get to start. It has a tendency to pop out of the carb as Im trying to get it started. I checked the valves and adjusted to .005 at TDC. What am I missing? Any thoughts? Previous owner replaced fuel pump, lines, carb, belts, filters, etc.

Thanks!
Ray

Pull the valve cover off and see if the rockers actually move when the engine turns over.

Possible that is has spark but it's just not good enough spark. It needs to be bright and consistent. Should see a spark for every revolution of the engine. If it's dim, or spark comes and goes then it's possible the coil is bad or the rev limiter is bad.
Easy check is to disconnect the brown wire on the limiter. Black box down low on the motor next to the oil filter. Remove the brown wire from the bracket and tape it off so it cant touch any metal. See if it runs with the limiter disconnected.
If you still have the same problem, then the coil is faulty.

The valves do appear to open and close correctly. I have a new coil on standby. I may give it a try just to ensure spark is sufficient.

This is what I'm currently working with for spark....

Worth a look is check the key way on the flywheel. I had one sheer on another motor and turned the flywheel on the shaft and caused it to spark at the wrong time. Try a leak down test if not able to find anything.

Thank you! Would I need a flywheel puller to take off and check? It seems like it has to be something along these lines....

Probably just take the nut off the end of the crankshaft and look at keyway and notch in flywheel. They should line up.

Thanks! Do I need a flywheel puller for this?

A little earlier I checked the position of the flywheel magnet at TDC. The leading edge was about a half inch before the coil. The magnet was not under the coil at all. Does this indicate a sheered key?

You might be able to just remove the nut and see if flywheel and crank line up at the keyway. There will
Be a notch in both.

Will need a flywheel puller if flywheel spun on crank. Im
Not sure which flywheel puller is needed for these engines but I have taken off flywheels with a steering wheel puller.
