Which Bearing?
2002 TXT Series. I've replaced brakes and axle bearings but still have constant unidentified noise under power from bottom rear of cart.
Today when going down a pretty steep hill I put the F/R switch in 'neutral' and coasted down the hill at 27mph and the noise immediately stopped. I'm thinking motor bearings since the noise stopped with the power cut off to the motor but I'm just guessing. Maybe input shaft bearings? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. |

Re: Which Bearing?
The motor cannot be mechanically disengaged from gears. It will turn while coasting.
Take a look at the rear housing cover and look for a dent. Sometimes when these thin metal covers get bent in they contact the gear and will cause them to be noisy and whine. |

If it was a bad motor bearing or input shaft bearing the noise would be there regardless? |

Re: Which Bearing?
Not necessarily, it could still be bearings, but those in the gear case. The fact that they get quitter when your costing is because the are unloaded, thus they are not in a bind/strain with pressure on them. once they load up again, when you put them in a bind by hitting the gas....they will get noisy again.

Re: Which Bearing?
No.
The tooth faces that are rubbing against each other are different when going forward under power and coasting while going forward. (Coasting forward uses same faces as reverse under power.) After 15 years of wear, mostly going forward under power, that set of tooth faces are polished smooth and won't hold onto much of an oil film when force is being applied to them, especially if the SAE 30 motor oil that EZGO puts in their differentials is used. |

Re: Which Bearing?
Thanks fellas, makes sense. Since the motor is relatively new, I'm thinking the input shaft bearings would be the usual suspect? Or at least an easy place to start?

Re: Which Bearing?
If the motor is new and you think it's not the motor Bearing. Remove the motor and pull out the input shaft. And replace the two bearings on it, and see if that will fix the problem

The tops of the teeth should have some thickness to them as seen in attached picture. If they are sharp enough to shave with, the gear needs to be replaced. The oil has to climb the furthest to get to that gear, so it'll have the most wear. |
