I do something similar. You're pretty well isolated in the dash, but to others that want to do something similar: The exposed metal of the USB port may be connected internally to the controller. I don't know if it is for certain, but there could be a potential to damage the controller if you let that USB port fall onto your primary voltage. Keep it away from your batteries or any exposed connections so that it doesn't fall into a bad situation. Just be mindful of that when leaving that cable laying around.
