Are my batteries fried?
I have an Ezgo with 4 12v batteries. I was working on my cart today and I accidentally touched the negative of the last battery with the negative of the first battery in the series. My wrench turned bright orange and nearly caught fire. Smoke and sparks were going everywhere. It took me a few seconds to knock it off, so it completely melted the two terminals to nothing. My question is...are my other 2 batteries fried as well?

Re: Are my batteries fried?
Maybe start by checking voltage at each battery individually with a volt meter. Were they fully charged when this happened ?

Re: Are my batteries fried?
Sounds "exciting".
I have shorted a 12 volt battery with a wrench but never a full pack. I highly recommend this insulated wrench. IMG_0487.JPG |

Depending on the type of controller you have, I'd be more concerned with that at this time. Make sure you didn't fry it.

Re: Are my batteries fried?
The other battey was 3 batteries "up the string". That's capable of instant third degree burns that blister faster than you can release the wrench (which he was fortunately not holding). I bet that the cart electronics & batteries are fine, as long as you can repair the terminals. Since only the battery terminals were touched, the cart electroncs should have felt only a reduced voltage while the wrench/fuse was in place, not some magical mosfet destroying EMP capable of wrecking all.

Re: Are my batteries fried?
I didn't know that grounding two negative post in the battery pack would shoot sparks and turn a wrench red hot.

Re: Are my batteries fried?
The other thing is it had to be one hell of a long wrench and bent, because if the battery hold down was in place it would be difficult to short any of them out except main battery negative and main battery positive, and that would be no bueno
