Best I can tell, a 6701 is a very old manual charger with mechanical timer. (No control board)

There were at least three versions of it, one with black case, one with gray case and one with a white case with a blue face-plate. In some of them the capacitor is mounted to the transformer and other have the capacitor mounted to the rear panel.

On one of the two schematics I have for them (attached), the capacitor is labeled as being 20µF.

The original diodes are press fit into the heatsink so they are very difficult to replace, but they can be replaced with off-the-shelf stud mount power rectifiers by simply boring a hole for the stud and bolting them in place. (see attachment #2)

45 +/- 4 VAC is applied to the diodes, so the peak voltage can be up to about 70V and you'll want something with at least a 100V rating. The max output is about 20A, so you'll want at least a 35A ratting.

A 1N1184 is 100V/35A. The 1N1188 shown in picture is 400V/35A.

Intermittent contact someplace.

I'd start at the transformer primary. Measure the voltage between the two wire from the timer to the transformer and see if it stays on all the time or drops out like the ammeter is doing.
