'14 RXV rear axle oil seal replacement
Oil/grim coating passenger side rear inner wheel as well as top of axle on same side. Not confident of diagnosis (a relative newbie), but assuming a bad oil seal. If that is the case, how difficult for me, with general /common homeowner type of tools, to replace? I have the part as #600344.
No unusual noises so far but assume I should drain/add new gear oil. Any insight on that process would also be appreciated. I've tried searching this forum for answers without success. May be due to my "rookieness". |

I use 25 ounces of Valvoline SynPower Full Synthetic 75W140 Gear Oil. And 2 ounces of K & W Chemical Trans-X® Posi Trac® Limited Slip Gear Oil Additive. For the pan I use Permatex Gear Oil RTV Sealant.

Thanks! You put the gear oil in the pan before replacing, right? Also, any experience replacing the oil seal?

Re: '14 RXV rear axle oil seal replacement
Ok no I don't put the oil in the pan.
I remove rubber drain plug and then remove drain pan bolts. I clean everything up by getting all the old gasket off and wiping everything down. Then I put rubber drain plug back on. Next put the Permatex around all the bolt holes and all along the edge. Put pan and back on and only tighten just to where the Permatex is touching the differential. Let sit there for about a hour then tighten bolts down to 16 to 24 lb-ft (22 to 33 N•m). I put oil down the axle tube by jacking up the driver side removing wheel and axle. But I usually wait to the next day to add the oil. Gives time for the gasket to dry. Here is a PDF to help you. |

Re: '14 RXV rear axle oil seal replacement
Here is what my funnel looks like. Much easier to get the oil down the axle tube with it.

Did you make that funnel, or did it come that way? If so, where did you get that exact one?
