Stay 36v or move to 48
Hi guys, first post here. I’ve been reading and learning a ton from all of you. Thank you.
I have recently acquired a 2003 EZGO txt 36v, series model, It has a lift and 23” tires. The cart runs great except struggles on hills because of the tire size I’m sure. Now that I’ve began going through this cart, I’ve found it has a Curtis 1205m-5605 controller that says 36-48v 500a. I’ve also found what appears to be an HD FnR, and bigger solenoid. I’ve found the old parts in a bin that came with the cart. The battery wires have been upgraded to 4g. I already have 2g wire, I just need to make the cables. The batteries are Trojan t105. I’ve been in contact with ScottyB, he recommended going to 48v. My question to you is, what do I need to do, other than 2 more 6v batteries and wires? What are the downsides? What will be the weak point? I use this cart for golf, no off-roading. Thank you all ahead of time. |

Re: Stay 36v or move to 48
The only downside to it is buying the batteries and charger, I just upgraded mine to 48v and couldn't be happier. The only issue you'll have with adding 2 more 6 volts is the added weight of the batteries. Most will recommend upgrading to 6-8v batteries if you're going to go with 48v.

You will need a 48 volt charger, 48 volt solenoid, and I think that curtis controller will need to be reprogrammed. The only downside I can think of is the cost.

Re: Stay 36v or move to 48
Thanks guys. I ordered a charger, and was accidentally sent a 48v charger so I’m good there. I don’t mind the cost of just 2 batteries and solenoid. I took a look and I’m not sure I can even fit 2 more batteries. Has anyone done 8 6 volts?
I believe it is the factory motor, will it survive alright? |

Re: Stay 36v or move to 48
The factory motor will love 48V! Talking about a 33% increase in speed and torque, but the 22" tires will negate some of that.
Going 48V is a no-brainer at this point because you have a lot of the components already installed and the charger sitting there. For the two batteries a lot of folks add them to the rear bag well but that won't work for you since you plan on using the cart for something really ridiculous...actually golfing Maybe someone else will chime in on how/if you can modify the battery tray to accommodate the extra 2 batteries. Or, if the batteries have any age on them you might be beneficial to wait until new batteries are needed and trade them in for 6- 8Vs. |

8 x 6v under the seat in a TXT has been done. Google it and click on hits from BGW.
I'm in the 6x8v camp. What do you know about the current batteries? Age etc. |

To use 8 x6volt batteries I've usually seen it with the controller relocated to behind the batteries and both the side compartments (outside the frame rails) devoted to the last 2 batteries.

Re: Stay 36v or move to 48
I did 8/6v under the seat in a series TXT one time. I spent a 8 hours shortening the F&R center pivot shaft, moving the F&R forward, and modifying the shift linkage to fit a full size T105 in behind it. and yes the controller and solenoid had to move to a location above the transaxle, which required an additional frame member for the mount.
The BEST advice I can give is sell the 6/6 battery pack and replace with 6/8v batteries. If you add 2 more 6v the cart will be 150 pounds heavier than 8/6v. This will adversely effect the power to weight ratio... like having a passenger who never gets out of the cart... and that back seat - it weighs 100 pounds too. As you see the weight is adding up fast against the electric motor. I hope this helps |

Re: Stay 36v or move to 48
Thanks guys. I really want to go 6 8v. I feel like I can make the 2 extra 6v work but, I don’t like the added weight. I’m gonna make some calls and see if there is any place locally I can trade the batteries towards some 8v.

Craigslist works pretty good, too.
