OK...that tool you see in the first post was made about 10 years ago as an advertising tool. They have not been made since.

SO, I think Simple Man's suggestion is the way to go with a plastic coat hanger. :)

When having to peer into hidden places on a live circuit was unavoidable, I've used plastic handled inspection mirrors similar to this:
http://www.amazon.com/PJ-Tool-Supply-Inspection-Mirror/dp/B003VSTF4A/ref=sr_1_49?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1319741760&sr=1-49 http://www.amazon.com/PJ-Tool-Supply-Inspection-Mirror/dp/B003VSTF4A/ref=sr_1_49?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1319741760&sr=1-49

For longer reach, I taped it to a non-conductive rod (IE: DRY wooden dowel)

It is a little tricky to do sometimes, but a short penlight (single cell) held close in front of your non-dominate eye and aimed at the mirror, will illuminated what you are looking at in the mirror.

That SUCKS!

And no one has any laying around? Dumb idea for Trojan to stop making them. They'd have made a killing.

Trojan's site shows you how to use the level indicator in your battery.

P.S. If you used this gauge, you also would have something laying around that has acid on it, if it wasn't rinsed off well after use! :)

Please tell me how exactly, you expect me to measure 1/8" below that piece of plastic.

Even if I could just try and "judge" the distance, I am better with metric than American, so it'd be even more difficult.

I know you're gonna think this funny but one of the handiest tools in the shop is one of these silly head lamps the father in law gave me a couple of years ago... It is great for not only seeing the water level but the condition of the separator plate as well

LOL

I have a pretty good amount of light, so I can see the water. The problem is judging when to stop squeezing the ketchup bottle I used to fill my cells.

Those lights are great! leaves 2 hands free, which really helps for lots of things. As far as guessing at the 1/8", I'm just used to it. I had to do it on boats for years, and sometimes with a whole lot less room to work in than in a golf cart. The important thing, as " scottyb " mentioned, is having good light!

That same Trojan website states that a rubber strip makes a good dipstick. That would be easy for anyone to make, tech savvy or not.
