Default Re: Convert EZGO RXV from 4 12v Batteries to 8 6v Batteries

I am running 6" lift with 10" wheel 23" tires. The day I used a GPS and got 18 miles it was just me, so I'm probably getting less with one other passenger. I don't have a back seat so usually only carrying one other. The temp was probably 60 degrees and I've noticed a drop in range on colder weather. Even though I just bought four new batteries I am seriously considering going with 6 x 8 volt or maybe even 8 x 6 volt batteries.

You are loosing about about 27% of the run-time you have in the summer due to the 40° temperature. (Roughly 10% loss for every 15°F below 80°F)

EZGO used three different AH rated 12V batteries in RXV's (140AH, 150AH and 155AH, so there is up to an 11% spread in run-time based on 12V battery AH rating alone.
Which 12V batteries do you have?

A 48V pack consisting of six Trojan Ranger 160 (8V - 204AH) batteries will have 47% more run-time than a 48V pack consisting of four Trojan T-1260 (12V - 140AH) batteries.

That is a 155AH 12V battery.

You are not changing the pack voltage, so you can simply use the 8V or 6V battery's AH rating to estimate the increase in run-time.

The highest AH 8V battery is 204AH, so you'd get a 31.6% increase. (240-155)/155= 0.316

The highest AH 6V battery is 260AH, so you'd get a 67.7% increase. (260-155)/155 - 0.677

I'm running the Crown GC150's, so 5 AH less than yours. Sounds like I am getting about all I can get out of these batteries, taking into account what you are getting with your setup and the loss due to temp that JohnnieB noted.

You can put 8 6 volt batteries under the seat if you want to invest in relocating the controller and other electronics on the passenger side. I went with the 8 volts to cut cost of buying inverter, battery tray, and fuse block. My intention was to invest more into batteries and move all the electronics and go with 8 6 volts the next time batteries were in order. I know I had range improvement but never got a chance to use GPS to check distance on a single charge. I was real happy with the conversion and the 8 volt batteries were cheaper than 12 volts saving some money there too, even after buying 2 additional batteries I saved $200.

I am converting to 6 8v Rangers myself on my RXV. Did anyone make their own battery tray? I haven't been able to find a dimensioned drawing anywhere, though.

I put 6-8 volt batteries in a aluminum tray that I got off of eBay. I made tie downs by cutting up the factory tie downs and using a piece of all thread. You will need 2 more battery cables, I replaced all of mine with larger gage welding wire. I have gone 17 miles on the new pack with life left in them, I just haven't needed to go further between charges yet.
