91 CC DS KF82 to GX390 engine swap
To make a long story short, i bought an old Club Car last year. Kind of in rough shape, seemed to run alright, Always burned some oil on a cold start up after sitting for more than a day or so. Latley, its been loosing power in lower RPMs and becoming much harder to start. Took about 15 minutes the other day to get it to even fire up. (45-50 degree weather). Did a compression test and it was only reading 80 PSI! Also has developed piston slap on startup. It still runs, but probably will eventually within the next few months it will probably finally too much compression to run. Ive been looking around on Ebay and golf cart shops, and engine rebuild kits can cost up to 700 bucks for this old thing! So, i have an idea. I Can get a Carroll Stream GX390 13HP engine for half as much, along with a 1'' driven clutch for 250 bucks saving me roughly $150, and gaining 5-6 HP as well as using half the gas that the Flathead uses. However, i'm gonna need some help...
First off, The mounting hole dementions of the KF82 are longer, and wider that that of the GX390. I would like to know if i could find an engine plate that could be used to fit these engines. I talked with Carts Parts Plus on their forum about the V Twin kits which those engines have the same mounting pattern as the GX390. However, they say that all Club Car engine swaps will work with the factory mounting plates, and an aftermarket carrier/plate is not needed... Now this doesnt make any sense to me because the mounting hole patterns are very different... With that in mind, theres also Hooking up the throttle cable. Should i try to use the factory linkage? Or should i try a custom setup? Then, theres the exhaust... The way this engine will be mounted, the stock exhaust will be pointed directly at the front of the body below the seat. What could be the best, and cheapest way to setup the exhaust to that it exits below the rear bumper? Im not sure how many of the guys here on BGW have done this conversion, but all input is helpful! Thanks! |

you need to go to the big block section under clone swaps and start reading and reading and reading. there is a lot of usefull info there all the things you mention are in there there are several different ways you could go on any one of the things you list. just depends on how you want to go about it. you can also buy an adapter so you can use your original clutch too.
