Re: do's dont's when installing controller
How old is the solenoid? Are you installing a larger controller?
Read the manual for the new controller sometimes there will be notes about not routing a cable over a specific spot due to sensitive electronics. Don't tighten the new controller to its mount in an uneven pattern. If a metal mount clean the mount so that the controller so that it can conduct heat evenly. Clean all your connections before hooking them up for smooth power flow..... |

Re: do's dont's when installing controller
It would be helpful to know what controller you are installing. The basics are don't connect or disconnect any wires without putting the controller in Tow mode. Disconnect the battery cables as the second step and don't reconnect until the very last step. If there is no power going to the controller, it is pretty difficult to short something out!
Pay very close attention to the orientation of all the wires on the existing controller. Even though most controllers come with decent schematics, some of the small wires can be a little confusing. Taking a picture of everything before you disassemble is a good idea. Double check all the wires and verify correct position before energizing the new controller. If you are upgrading to a higher amp controller, you definitely need to upgrade the solenoid as well. Depending on the rating of the new controller you may need to upgrade your cables as well. Make sure you upgrade all 10 cables. My PDS cart had 4 gauge cables between batteries and from the controller to the motor, but the other three cables between the batteries and solenoid/controller were still just the stock 6 gauge cables. Cleaning the connections is also good advice. My Alltrax had warning tape on the cable lugs which left a nice sticky residue that would have prevented good electrical connections. Many people also recommend the use of dielectric grease or vaseline on the connections to prevent corrosion. |
