how to make a resistor cart faster

we have a 1990 EZGO txt electric golf cart with brand new batteries looking to make it run faster... Any tips would be helpful as we are new to this hobby! thanks in advance

new gears in rear end, is one option but you will lose torque. The best is to change the motor or have yours rebuilt.

How to make a XXXXX golf cart faster? More volts. And a solid state motor controller (like alltrax SPM-48400) in your situation. The resistor coil setup does not lend itself to upgrades, it just wasnt designed for more amp loads of a high performance motor.

Welcome to BGW!

There is an inconsistency between the model year (1990) and body style (TXT).
If it is a TXT (Plastic body) it is 1996 or later.
You said it was a resistor drive, so that most likely means the body style is a Marathon.

Installing taller tires would up the speed a little, but at the expense of the torque available where rubber meets road.

The stock height tires are 18" tall and the stock cart speed is about 10 to 12 MPH, so installing 20" tires would up the speed by about 11% to about 11.1 MPH to 13.3 MPH while reducing the stock torque by 10%.

To go taller the 20", you will have to lift the body and frame of the cart off the axles for tire clearance.

If the resistor drive system was replaced with an electronic speed control system, than the pack voltage could be increased from 36V to 48V for a 33% increase in both speed and torque. However, that would require a new set of batteries and a 48V charger as well as the conversion kit.

These guys are telling you right. Bigger tires, taller gears, and higher performance motors are all going to cause the motor (even a new or refurbished one) to draw more amperage to operate.
An increased amperage flow is the one thing this system won't handle well. The basic resistor cart components, speed wiper, resistor coils, and F&R are not designed for much more load than hauling 2 people down the fairway 300 yards and then left to cool a while before repeating the task.
A solid state conversion is the answer to the problem. Then you can make all the upgrades any modern cart can.
