Default Brand new batteries charge question

I just installed my set of brand new Trojan 105s in a project I've been working on. I took it for a spin around the block to test it out and placed the charger on it for the first charge. I have a Powerwise II charger and it gave a loud hum when I first plugged it in and the ammeter read about 15. But within 20 minutes the hum was very low and the ammeter read 13. I checked it this morning and the ammeter read 0 but the charger was still humming lightly. My reading last night showed 39.2. Were my batteries just fully charged or do I have a problem with the charger?

Also, isn't the charger supposed to turn off when batteries are fully charged?

Thumbs up Re: Brand new batteries charge question

I would say it was doing as it should. If it started out at 15 on the amp gauge they where pretty well charged. Yes it should cut off if it working right. If the amp meter showed 0 and still humming something is not right.

Unless you have a float mode built into the charger like DPI then the draw may be so low it would not show on the ammeter.

Thanks for the responses y'all.

Ok so I just checked the cart (I took the charger off early this morning after checking it and seeing the ammeter at zero). The reading was in the high 38s so I went for a quick ride to start the break in process.
I rode it down to about 37.3 and put it back on the charger. The ammeter again goes straight to 13 and not 20. Should I not expect it to go all the way to 20?

Wink Re: Brand new batteries charge question

There could be a problem with it. What kind of voltage does it have while charging? How long did it charge. Running it down to 37.3 is not even a full volt less than full charge.
I would charge it until it cuts off then let it sit for at least 6 hrs before you do anything. Check the volts then.

Actually the voltage at 100% charge that's shown on the chart above, is what the reading should be 12 Hrs. after the charger shuts off. (38.22 v)

The charger has been back on for about an hour. The charger shows 10 (maybe 9) amps and the pack reads 40.5v.

I only ran it down to 37.3 because I had read to run it down to 75% 10-12 times to break in the batteries.

Charger should charge batteries to about 45-46 volts before it kicks off. Try keeping a close eye on it to see how high it charges.
