Help with battery selection
First of all, this is not a rehash of which battery is better than the next. I need advice on battery brand for the application.
I have a 2007 CC Precedent (12v x 4) with 6" lift and 23" tires. Upgrading to Alltrax XTC 400 or 500, solenoid, and 2 ga cables. Possible motor change in the future. After reading numerous posts concerning performance upgrades, battery choices and OBC bypass, I have the following questions: 1. Are Trojans a better choice because of the charging algorithms between the stock charger and OBC? I have read posts that state US Battery 12v don't fully charge with stock Powerdrive charger. 2. Would it be wise to bypass OBC and purchase new charger? 3. Does converting to 8v x 6 require bypass of OBC and new charger? Thanks in advance for the replies. |

Re: Help with battery selection
I guess the correct answer to this question would depend on whether or not you were going to convert the car to six 8 volts or leave the 12 volts in it. If you're gonna leave the 12s in it, you need to see what version OBC is in the car. If it's older than v3.0 I wouldn't advice it. You mentioned that you had heard that the Powerdrive charger wouldn't fully charge US batteries. That's not true. The charger is irrelevant in an OBC controlled system. The OBC will charge 12 volt batteries the same regardless of brand. There were not multiple algorithms available within the OBC for different branded 12 Volt batteries. They all used the same OBC. Only software versions were updated over the years. The best setup, but most expensive would be to convert the car to the 8 volt configuration and install a new set of Trojan or Crown batteries. The conversion kit does not require you to bypass the OBC. The OEM conversion kit actually includes a new OBC with a charge algorithm for a Trojan or Crown (both use same algorithm)
