Brakes soft after lift
I just lifted my Precedent. I installed a 6" double A Arm lift with 4" lift blocks in the rear so it doesn't sit raked up in the back, sits perfectly level now which is what I wanted to achieve . I've read that with 6" lifts you need the longer brake cable or do the brake flip. My question is, since I only have a 4" block in the rear, do I need to get the longer cable? The cable is not under any stress and still has plenty of play. My brakes are now soft and take much longer to bring the cart to a stop. Is this something I can adjust under the floor mat? There isn't a ton of play in the pedal it just doesn't feel like the brakes are grabbing like they used to. Any help or tips is appreciated.

Re: Brakes soft after lift
Pull the drums and see if the brakes are adjusted up tightly and if so, then actuate them and see if they are traveling linear to the pedal engagement. You should identify the problem from there...

Any idea why they would be soft all of the sudden after putting on the lift? They were adjusted properly and working before. Is it possible when letting the axle drop to install the springs and blocks above the axle that the cable stretched causing them to not engage like the did prior? Just trying to get an idea as to why they may be out of adjustment now. Thanks. |

Re: Brakes soft after lift
Exactly. Or the adjusters backed when it dropped down and now there is travel before engagement with the drums.... The inspection should confirm the problem. and be sure to rough up the drum and the face of the shoes with some 80 grit to remove any glaze from them while it is opened up.

Re: Brakes soft after lift
You didn't say, but if you installed larger diameter tires when you did your lift, you will experience reduced braking force.

Re: Brakes soft after lift
Took brakes apart and inspected. Everything appeared to be normal and functioning. Cleaned everything off but didn't have sandpaper to scuff up the drum and pad, will have to do this another time. I compressed the pedal 2 times with the drum off and the adjusting mechanism (small circular saw blade looking thing) clicked both times which made it harder to get the drivers side drum back on, but it went. Passenger side went on tight as well, now both have a little drag on them when spun. Took it down the street and still soft brakes. Came back in and pulled the floor panel and adjusted the pedal play which did the trick, did it too well actually, I went down the street again and the brakes locked up. Backed it off a bit and found the sweet spot, everything working normal again. Thanks for the help Nole!

Re: Brakes soft after lift
Yes I did put on larger tires, went from 18" to 22". And I expected the braking to be affected, just not like it was. It was definitely from play on the brake rod and pedal.

Re: Brakes soft after lift
The manual calls for the brake cable equalizer freeplay to be adjusted to 2 inches +- 1/16" or you will get "Reduced Brake Force".

Re: Brakes soft after lift
Yes, putting on larger tires/ wheels can cause this. Glad you got it figured out
