This will be my third season with the cart. First two were flawless aside from needing batteries. And there was no rust inside when I drained the oil a week ago. All shiny. Looked almost new.

Look real close at the case bolts. Any Mark's that would indicate prior repairs?

The cover? It hadn't ever been removed as far as I could tell

Kinda sounds like a bad motor bearing.

True. Doesn't really explain the metal in the oil though.

Did you see metal flakes or glitter in the oil?
Water in oil looks like milky grey or brown depending on the oil type and it’s age. That milky grey color in the pic you posted above doesn’t necessarily mean there’s metal in the fluid.

The motor is easy enough to find out if the bearing is bad or if there’s some issue with the armature. Remove it from the axle and take it apart. If there’s a problem in the motor it should be pretty obvious.
Aside from that, one of the bearings in the rear axle is seized. With the motor removed You will be able to spin the input shaft on the axle by hand, and any problem in the axle will be noticeable.

The picture below is how a major failure in an axle can look when the oil is drained. This was making no noise... yet.

Good to know. The noise appears to be coming from either the motor or the input shaft based on screwdriver tests.

Looks like I'll be pulling the motor out this weekend to verify.

How much play should there be in the motor shaft? Seems like a lot on mine. Input shaft seems fine.

Also input shaft looks like seal was leaking. Bunch of greasy crud in behind the motor when I took the motor off. Must be a combo of both bearings.

Got the input shaft bearing out. It's toast on the inner bearing. Outer bearing is difficult to move but doesn't have any issues with play. Ordered new bearings for the input shaft and rear wheel bearings. Will order upgraded motor soon
