Default G9 knock and no spark

These problems may be related but I don't see how. The no spark problem was the spark plug cap it was open and should have 1 K resistance. I replaced the cap and it tried to run but back fired some and just could not get any RPM's.
I pulled the valve cover ans saw the exhaust valve was not moving. I pulled the engine yesterday and couldn't find my clutch puller until this morning. I pulled the clutch and side plate and found the cam shaft broken in two pieces.
I assembled this engine from two so I think an assembly dimension was too tight.
I did not use a gasket on the side plate. I used aviation form-a-gasket which may be problem but I don't think so. I am trying to align the cam and balancer now but a lack of timing marks is causing another problem. Please give me your thoughts on this matter.

I have never re-built a stock G9 engine, but there has got to be a way of
timing the cam shaft.

I read the book again and found answer to balancer and cam timing. The engine is together again. But why did the cam shaft break in half? I have run out of cam shafts and side plates!

Man, that's a good one, I don't know. Maybe someone else will jump in here.

I think I have the answer! This engine had thrown a rod due to .012 crank to rod bearing clearance and I think the cam was cracked at that time. It lasted a month or so.
