Re: Yamaha G2 Dies When Warm
I can send you both if you want. Try one at a time when it acts up.

Re: Yamaha G2 Dies When Warm
Use a dynamic spark tester, that way you can see the spark or no spark when it dies and won't damage the ignitor. Might try this, unscrew the spark plug cap (counter clockwise), cut off a very small section of the wire and screw the cap back on. In my experiance, if a G2/G9 loses spark after "warm/running for a while", the spark returns after cool down, it's the ignitor.

Re: Yamaha G2 Dies When Warm
Ok I haven't reached the point of it dying, but I've run across this problem. I've been running it around, and let it roll to a stop. Pressed the pedal to restart, and it hesitated. This has now become a frequent issue. The battery is sitting at 12.85v, go to start it, it hesitates. When it hesitates, the battery drops to 10.65v. Once it starts the battery goes back up to 12.85v and slowly climbs up with the cart running until it gets to about 13.7v, and then it seems to level off. When it hesitates, the solenoid clicks, and the S/G attempts to turn the belt. After a few seconds it spins and everything is good. I'm not 100% sold on the battery being bad because the cart starts fine more times than it doesn't, and there's usually no pattern to when it will not start / hesitate

Re: Yamaha G2 Dies When Warm
At 10.65 it will hesitate to start when the engine was on compression stroke. Might want to check the starter brush's also. When rpm'd up you should read 14.5 to 15.5 volts.

Re: Yamaha G2 Dies When Warm
I charged the battery overnight, so we'll see if that helps anything. What do you think of the low charging voltage?

Re: Yamaha G2 Dies When Warm
Sounds like a weak battery and/or poor cable connections (something very common with G2/9s, check any connections). I once had to file the battery posts and clamps to get a connection, a wire post cleaner would not work.

Re: Yamaha G2 Dies When Warm
I charged the battery overnight and that did not seem to solve the problem.. I may just leave it for now. Doesn't really affect the drive-ability of the cart

Re: Yamaha G2 Dies When Warm
You should not see ~10 volts at starting, a cart does not take much power to start. A battery that will not start a car will still start a cart no problem. So that would be maybe bad brushes in the starter/gen, bad connections in the main cables, bad battery, clutch dragging badly making the cart move when starting (putting a load on the starter), etc. I don't think a solenoid would do that but possible, mine just stopped working half the time when it went bad.
13.7 is normal charge range. The gen will not make full power until you are at mid or high rpm, they don't do much at low speed. If your battery charger shows big charge then goes back to 0 charge in a few minutes that is sign of a weak battery, they discharge and charge very quickly. You could jump it and see if that helps to have more power on tap, though if the brushes were bad it would also help it start better to have more power. |
