Default Re: Do factory CC ERIC chargers float charge?

Mine is a PowerDrive charger, not an ERIC, but I imagine the voltages are going to be similar.

As you can see on the attached spreadsheet mine was at 50.4 after 12 hrs rest earlier on but is now at 51V last time I checked. That was after a standard PowerDrive charge and a 12 hr rest.

I don't usually take a reading while it is charging but I did on 21/22 Jan when it showed 52.4V not long after the charger had been connected then 56.9V after the charger had been connected for a few hours but then that dropped to 50.4V after it had rested (off charge) for 12hrs.

When I got the Save a Battery it would show 53.3V just after I disconnected it but then drop to somewhere between 50.5V and 51V after resting for 12hrs.

Default Do factory CC ERIC chargers float charge?

Wow that is some OCD battery tracking right there. I’m impressed. So I was always under the impression that the battery voltage begins to drop as soon as the charger is unplugged. I guess I misinterpreted the whole let it rest for 12 hours after pulling the charger off.

The voltage does drop immediately after charger shut off but the 12 hour thing is to ensure the pack has stabilized and to give consistency to make comparisons to this chart.
That's why it is a little alarming to hear your almost new batteries have already dropped in capacity. But they may be fine. Just want to make sure you are checking them under the circumstances we assume when making judgements.

I’ll unplug it tonight and let it sit then check in the morning. I always assumed that right after unplugging the charger it would be the highest and as it settles over the next 12 hours it would always drop. I did it one time when the cart was about 2 weeks old and that was the result and thought it would always be that way. But what do I know, that’s why I should never assume..

I had that chart saved on my phone the day the cart came home.

Just to clarify, unplugging it makes no difference. Once it shuts off, it will not turn on again until you unplug and replug it or enough time passes that a maintenance charge is automatically triggered. So you can check or document anything you want when the charger is off without unplugging it.

And you are correct in that when the charger completes its cycle and turns off automatically, its charge will be at the highest state. BUT, this does not tell you the true health condition of your batteries, only that your charger is functioning correctly. ~12 hours later is when it has settled and the electrolyte levels stabilized so this is when you know their "true" condition in regards to charge level.

It's what you can do when you are retired and have time to "fiddle".

The reason it is pronounced that way is because it has an "i" in it. The product name is Aluminium!!!

BTW, I'm also an avid Wheeler Dealers fan but only for the Ed China bits.
