Default White A2 Motor Wire Question

Again I would like to thank everyone for all of your help getting my first cart up and running. Again I am talking about a 1997 Club Car DS 48 Volt. I am in the middle of what I think is the last step needed to get this cart on the road. I am replacing the motor controller. I picked up a new one today and it is EXACTLY the same as the original but upgraded (i guess) to 400 amps rather then 300 amps (input on this as well please??)........... Here is the question..... There is a thick white wire that comes from the F/R controller in the front and another that comes from the A2 terminal of the motor. ORIGINALLY when I took the bad controller out yesterday both of these white wires were connected to the A2 terminal on the controller. Every diagram I have found shows this wire running straight thru and NOT connected to the controller at all. In fact in the diagrams it shows the controller only having three large terminals not four. Is this the way it should be or could it be the reason the old controller was smoking? Thank you and I hope to have this cart moving today.

The fourth terminal indicates that the controller supports plug-braking, hook it up the way it was.
