Crazy Battery Configuration - Six 12v = 36v
LOL! OK I am scratching my head on this one.
I was contacted today by a customer that heard I buy and refurbish and resell golf carts. He wanted me to look at his 36v EZGO to see if I could figure out why it didn't run. He stated that he replaced the old batteries and wired it up just like it was before. It ran on the old batteries but has never run on the new batteries. See attached picture of battery configuration. I plan to straighten this out by making two 36v banks and putting them together. Curious to hear what you guys have to say! Thanks |

The battery wiring looks like it should work. Not a good setup (incorrect batteries for a golf cart, will have a short life) , but batteries should not be stopping it from running if they are charged.

Welcome to BGW! The diagram from Mr. Groves is perfect. It represents two 36v banks wired in parallel producing 36v. This cart will not have the long range that 6-6v series layouts provide, but it will power the cart correctly. If 12v batteries is what you gotta stick with, than that's what ya gotta deal with.

I see no reason why it wouldn't work the way it is.

G, I have a headache now too. Like PGGroves' document says, you need two sets of 3 12 volt batteries. Hook each set of 3 into series to make two 36 volt packs, then hook those in parallel. I don't THINK that's what the cart is currently set up as, but the headache makes it hard to tell.

It is currently wired as 3 large 12v batts, it gets you 36v total. (i sort of prefer the way they are now, although not pretty, i think it would be nicer to uneven batts). The other method in the drawing gets you 2 smaller 36v packs, still 36v total.

Re: Crazy Battery Configuration - Six 12v = 36v
Looking at the picture in the first post.
It looks like the White charging wire is connected UNDER the Red high current wire. This is backwards and will limit the current or make a bad/high temp connection. Smaller, lower current connections should be on top. |
