Default steering help

HELP!!! I was redoing an 81 club car and the steering was very sloppy so i started digging into it and found that there is an adjustment on the end of the steering box.(holds worm drive bearing) took cap out and had bearing balls in my had cradle was broke. got new one and now cant get cap to screw all the way in to get the lock key in. what did i do bearings are the same.
