Gotcha will unplug then. Access is tight but not impossible enough to lose warranty over. Loving the new setup

You can also just make sure the cable is nowhere near the batteries, I use a 10ft USB cable that terminates in the glove box.

I use a USB-A cover that stays attached to cable so it doesn't get misplaced.

Couldn't you extend the cable to a USB surface mount female connector?

I actually purchased that exact item (as reminded by Amazon when I clicked your link) but at the end I decided that was just as dangerous since it would be too close to the batteries and if you disconnected the cable from the laptop first, it could still drop in the battery compartment.

With the USB cable in the front of the cart it is a lot more difficult to accidentally drop the cable in the battery compartment.

You also need to keep the cable end protected using something similar to what JohnnieB posted.

That would solve the problem of standing on your head under the set to plug the cable into the controller, and with careful mounting placement it would reduce the possibility of the metal shield coming in contact with battery voltage.

Might be better to find a bulkhead connector with a flip up water resistant cover.

A longer one could be mounted inside the glove compartment. Just showing an example. I'd look at a boat store if I had that type connector. Mine's a DB9.

Yes, you can do all of that. I feel obligated to warn people of the hazard.
And most people are done making changes (if any) in a weekend or 2 and after that they never access the controller again.
Have fun

I haven't plugged into mine since Win XP, and a laptop with a serial port.
