EZGO Electric Tachometer
Has anyone installed a Tachometer on their EZGO or Western Golf Cart? If so, what tach did you use and please explain installation.

Re: EZGO Electric Tachometer
Ive never seen a tachometer for an electric cart. The only thing I can think of is using a product called Cycle Analyst. You can program it to display RPM in the field marked MPH, but I am not sure why you might want to do that.

Re: EZGO Electric Tachometer
-don't need one- I was just curious to read motor rpm vs. calculating it from my GPS speedometer and tire size.

Re: EZGO Electric Tachometer
We don't need everything, some things we just want, cuz their cool. I would LOVE a tach for a sparky cart. I'm surprised it doesn't exist already.

Re: EZGO Electric Tachometer
Its gonna be tough on any "series" cart (never designed for a tach sensor). "sepex"carts already have a tach sensor (except DCS and clubcar Regen1). Might be able to find a way to "steal" its signal (but most have at least 4 pulses per revolution). Theres gonna be some "trial-&-error" to get them to read true rpm correctly. If you are not sure what type system you have (series or sepex), you are not yet ready to try to make a tach sensor/ tachometer mod. You could use readily available bike speedometers to calculate your rpms, If you know the original gear ratio.

Re: EZGO Electric Tachometer
Like CG said, you need a speed sensor on the motor, so that pretty much limits it to Sepex drive systems like the PDS and similar.
If your motor does have a speed sensor, connecting an electronic tachometer is fairly straightforward. Attached are the tach and wiring diagram I'll be using when I finally get around to installing it. The tach I'm using is called an Ultra-Shift Light (Stewart Warner) and the shift LEDS can be set to anything fro 0-13,000 RPM. My plan is to set them to come on at 6,500 RPM. which is the max recommended RPM for my motor. I have an automotive type DMM in my collection and when I was running a stock PDS system, I used it to measure motor RPM. (Neg test lead to J5 Pin-1 and Pos test lead to J5 Pin-2, which is the sensor output signal.) When set for an 8 cylinder engine, it gave me an RPM that matched my RPM calculations based on GPS speed, tire heright and gear ratio, so the output from a the speed sensor on a stock PDS motor is 4 pulses per motor revolution. |

Re: EZGO Electric Tachometer
Very interesting... JohnnieB, did you have the sensor connected to the controller at the time?

Re: EZGO Electric Tachometer
I don't think Alltrax uses this sensor.

Re: EZGO Electric Tachometer
JohnnyB has an Alltrax DCX, no speed sensor input needed.
