That is the brake hub? Looks like the half collet can be tightened on the axle splines. I've not seen one like that. But yes, if that was loose it would make noise and eventually not go. How do the axle splines look?

Edit, Looking closer, that really doesn't look stock. I would say that someone had a striped axle in the past and they fixed it by cutting that "half collar" off with a bandsaw. Then they bored some countersunk bolt holes to hold it together. It may work. I would use lots of locktite on those bolts. Otherwise I would just go back to stock.

Splines look fairly well, little play but not enough to worry about I think.

That is an aftermarket hub. The 2 halves are designed to clamp the axle and provide a more secure connection than stock. The stock hub has a documented weakness in this area. Some time ago we manufactured a different version which was a one piece hub & drum. It was split and tapped. We provided locktite for the bolts. I never saw one come loose.

The hub splines look good I can't speak for the threads? If the splines are damaged on the axle it will need to be replaced. Otherwise a couple of Grade 8 hex head bolts should fix her up.

Guys thanks for all the help with this issue. I have just put everything back together and we are still having an issue. Found that a bearing was bad on the driveshaft to the motor. I am at the point that the bearing failure is allowing the gear set to separate enough to make a grinding noise. I will be looking for the drive shaft set with both bearings. Any suggestions on a good supplier?
