Yes it does kill the controller. It does permanent damage. I don't know why but I was suddenly inundated with RXV controllers that were from carts with cut buzzer wires. One or more people are out there intent on killing RXVs. I've been tied up with visitors here, so I've done my best to get things turned around and sent back out...

The best I can do is bypass and disable the damaged areas in the controllers so that they can pass the powerup testing and still be usable somewhat. This will permanently render the buzzer unstable. They tend to sound off intermittently.
