Default my neighbor

My neighbor came over the other day to show me a golf cart he picked up for 500.00 (he knows I like to putz around with golf carts)
After looking at the cart, To me it looked like a older club car DS resistor cart whereas I have only seen this type in 36 volt. However this cart has 6 8 volt batteries. It did come with a 48 volt charger.
one thing I did notice was the tail light lens was melted where the bulb got very hot. The lights were running on 16 volts.

The cart is very very fast. and he said that it was hard to stop it.

any thoughts on this, I'm positive that if it breaks down he will come visit me. and again I like to putz around with these carts.

Most 36v resistor carts can handle 48v without too much difficulty so it's likely that a previous owner simply replaced the 6v batteries with 8v ones. Not a huge deal as resistor carts don't have any electronics that burn up easily.

Tell him to invest in a 48v to 12v reducer and soon as he can.... (low cost investment)

The old 5 solenoid resistor carts can handle 48v a lot better than the VGlide resistor carts.

led bulbs will fix that, most 12v led lights are good from 9 to 20 volts

If you do as Nole has suggested you will save the bulbs and the batteries.
