Painting Question

Hey guys, I did some searching but didn't find much on painting.

I recently acquired a 2000 DS that needs a little TLC. The fiberglass is painted black, but it's peeling pretty badly. I plan to sand it all down smooth and repaint. What's the best paint to use for this application? I read where enamel that's thinned with hardener added is a good option. Anyone have experience with this?

Also, I'd like to paint the seats a darker khaki color. I painted the seats on my other cart a couple years ago with flat rattle can made for plastics, but it cracked over time. This past weekend I repainted those seats with some Duplicolor made specifically for vinyl and fabric. I am disappointed in that paint because it peeled after only an hour or two of seat time today. Does anyone have a better experience with painting the vinyl seats?

Any good paint will adhere well to 'glass. One of the best things about our carts compared to the newer plastic carts. Automotive paint or in my case equipment enamel both work well. The key to an outstanding finish is prep, prep, and when you think you are finished, look harder and prep again.

A 2000 would be plastic and not fiberglass.

And seat paint rarely works well...

Interesting. I just assumed it would be fiberglass. Good to know!

Thanks for the advice! When you say prep you mean clean the surface right? What's the best cleaner to use?

I can't say for sure what your 2000 body is made of, but my 2000.5 DS is not fiberglass. Mine is a polycarbonate. If yours is polycarbonate, it presents unique problems with paint adhesion. All of the other paint must be removed, then an adhesion promoter must be sprayed on prior to any application of primer or paint. Before you start, you need to identify the material.

Furniture stripper works great. I’m doing another one now too. It won’t hurt the plastic.



Then sand



I did adhesion promoter and then many coats of automotive lacquer and clear coat.



The cart in the background of that last picture is the one I’m redoing today.

Kleen strip or something from Lowes
