Mine does not slide very freely, it pretty much stays where I put it, how does that setting look to you? Should there be more cable showing?

It is not suposed to slide on the inner cable, it has a crimp ring on it.
Looks fine as long as you have unobstructed travel of the inner cable.

A backfire is burning fuel at the wrong time. It either is coming out the carb, or going out the exhaust. If it is coming out the carb, it is a timing issue, if it is coming out the muffler it is a fuel being let in that is not ignited.

Carb must fully close and micro switches must be closing/opening at the right time. Carbs sometimes let fuel in even though they are closed, could be a problem with the carb, or a linkage adjustment.
