Angry Smelly Oil

'05 CC lifted cart with lifted body. The governor was been disconnected and tie wraps installed to make the 290 run faster. I have replaced the oil with Royal Purple, but when checking the oil level, the stuff smells more like gas fumes. When running at high RPM's (~3700 - 3800) the frickin' oil light will sometimes come on. Is this a warning sign of damage to the engine??

Oil light is strickly for oil level not pressure. The only thing its telling you is oil is pumping up to top of motorfaster than it can run down. Thinner oil will usually cure the issue

I am using 10w-30. Should I be using a different weight. The oil has a smell of gas to it.

If gas is leaking through carb or fuel pump oil level will go up while parked. Is this happening? As for the oil light you could try 5w30 and see if it goes away. Also look at the drive clutch and see if belt is coming to the top, If not drive clutch needs some maintenance that will cause engine to run faster because of higher ratio.
