Take a good ground wire and connect it the the negative side of battery. Leave the other one on. Connect the other end to frame of starter. See what happens.

That would amount to the same test as using the jumper cables.

Will let you know if its a grounding issue.

Gearhead1956, you are correct but jumper cables tend to sometimes not make good connections and that's why I suggested he connect a good ground cable bolted on where he knows he is getting a ground.

I also agree that the brushes are probably the issue if indeed his ground is good. These S/G are pretty tough. Tom

Whats the trick trig123??

Although I think brushes are 1/2 the job. cleaning up the armature is the other 1/2.

Its all about making a good contact.

I have replaced probably 30 brush sets since I started working on these things 23 years ago. Never once pulled one apart.

I remove starter of course , then rubber plug .

I then take a old coat hanger or welding rod . I then make a hook on one end so I can just lift the springs up and out of the way. Remove screw and on with new one.

I can install a set in about 30 minutes. Never had one to fail.
I know I probably should clean the armature but I really never seen one that bad.

Well I'll be, as many starters I have rebuilt over the years I have never even thought about that
